Miami (AP) Fishing for a big fish?
It’s easy to find a good spot in Miami.
The Coral Gables area has a reputation as one of the most popular spots for anglers in the country, so when one of Miami’s best-known fish therapists opened up a new practice a few years ago, he didn’t think it would be in the neighborhood.
“I was looking around the area and I saw a big trout in the pool, I said, ‘I’m going to give it a shot,'” said Tom Smith, the founder and president of Florida Fish Therapies.
The fish therapist is one of a handful of people in the Miami area who specialize in treating anglers.
He works with both trout and largemouth bass and other species of fish, including the Florida bass and the bluegill, and he works with the Big Fish Foundation, a non-profit group that works to rehabilitate and educate the angler about fish therapy and conservation.
Smith says he is known as a “big fish guy” in Miami because he specializes in working with a range of species including largemouth and bluegills, and his clients have included top politicians and celebrities, including rapper Drake and former President George W. Bush.
“A lot of people are saying, ‘How do you do this?’ but they don’t understand what it takes,” he said.
Smith said he thinks fish therapy is the best way to help fishermen feel comfortable with their fishing gear.
Fish therapy can be especially helpful if you’re new to fishing, he said, because you’ll learn what it’s like to work with a fish that’s different than the one you were used to.
“If you go back and look at the first fish you’re used to, you can still recognize that fish,” he told The Associated Press.
Fish therapists can offer a wide range of treatment options, including fish nets, trawl nets, and the like, and they can even help you make money with the product.
Fish therapists also have an eye on the welfare of their clients, too.
For example, they often offer support for those who are on the verge of losing their fishing licenses, and fish therapy can help get you out of that predicament.
“It’s not about the fish, it’s about you,” Smith said.
“This is not a job for everyone.
There are people that just want to have fun and enjoy life, but there are also people that need a change.
And they need help.
They’re looking for a place to go fishing.”
Smith said he hopes to open another practice in the area in the future, and that he and his wife, Kelly, would like to have children in the fishing industry.
